Persona 4 Revival
Verdict so far: treat Persona 4 Revival as suspect. Until the full JP/EN scripts are out and compared, Persona 4 Golden remains the safer non-woke, less-sanitised experience.
Woke Score: 61/100 — producer-confirmed “modern audience” dialogue edits and visible Shadow Kanji imagery scrub, but the game is not out yet and full gender/sexuality activist packaging is not the main vector so far.

Confirmed: “for the world we live in now”
Persona Team producer Kazuhisa Wada has said, in multiple interviews (including Anime Corner / Anime Expo coverage), that Revival does not rewrite characters’ “core identities,” but it does adjust lines that were “rough,” “underthought,” or unclear — explicitly to fit “the world we live in now.”
He pointed especially at Yosuke Hanamura: softening how Yosuke treats “outsiders.” In the original, that includes the abrasive / homophobic-coded material fans have argued about for years (notably around Kanji). Softening that for modern sensibilities is classic remake sanitation — agenda-aligned dialogue edit, not an art-style redesign.
Wada has also said Kanji and Naoto Social Links will not be altered “at base.” Treat that as a promise to verify after release, not a free pass.
Confirmed in marketing: Kanji Shadow scrub
Fans and press (including Vice and Kotaku coverage of trailer / broadcast footage) noted changes in Kanji’s Shadow dungeon imagery:
- Shadow Kanji’s weapons: from ♂♂ to ♂♀
- Bathhouse banner language: from men only (男子専用) toward unisex (男女兼用)
That is deliberate scrubbing of the original’s queer-allegory visual language. Whether dialogue follows the same path is still unconfirmed until the game is out.
Studio pattern (context, not speculation)
Atlus already reworked Persona material for modern audiences in Persona 3 Reload (notably the beach / “trans panic” style scene from older versions). Revival’s language about fitting the current era sits in that same habit.
Still open (watch list)
- How deep Yosuke’s script actually changes in the full game
- Whether Naoto’s gender-presentation arc gets the same “clarity” rewrite
- Fanservice / bath / feminine presentation cuts (rating chatter exists; needs before/after proof)
- Whether English localisation goes further than Japanese (classic Atlus risk)

Recommendation
Play Persona 4 Golden for the unedited 2008 / Vita-era text and presentation. Keep Revival on this page’s watch list. When trailers, interviews, or side-by-side script dumps drop, this article gets updated in place.
Sources include producer interviews reported by GameSpot, Polygon, Push Square / Anime Corner, Persona Central (GamerBraves), PCGamesN, Kotaku, and Vice coverage of Shadow Kanji imagery. Claims marked “confirmed” are tied to those public statements or on-screen marketing; everything else is flagged as open.
