Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
Verdict: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter looks like a respectful remake of SC, and so far it’s cleaner than its predecessor. Eight days after its worldwide launch, we can’t find a single documented script rewrite, cut scene or inclusive-language change. The ESRB still lists revealing outfits, breast physics, drunk characters and a casino, and the English script has moved back toward the series’ established terms. The score reflects a fan-reported spats addition to Estelle’s new outfit and Falcom’s own track record from 1st Chapter, where it did scrub gender lines in Japanese.
Woke Score: 22/100 (provisional). No confirmed DEI or censorship change yet. Points are held back for the reported costume tweak and the chance that the same line edits we found in 1st Chapter turn up as players finish SC’s 80-hour script. This page will be updated as line-by-line comparisons come in.

Release status (checked 25 September 2026)
- Official title: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter (Japan: Sora no Kiseki the 2nd). It’s a full remake of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (Windows, 2006).
- Out now, everywhere. It launched 17 September 2026 in a simultaneous worldwide release on PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam (Steam shows 16 Sep in US time zones).
- Publishers: Nihon Falcom in Japan. GungHo Online Entertainment America in North America and Europe (NIS America isn’t involved). Clouded Leopard Entertainment did the Chinese and Korean versions, and PM Studios / Clear River Games handles European physical copies.
- One regional gap: the Switch and Switch 2 physical editions in Europe and Australia were delayed to 29 September 2026 (PM Studios). Digital and PS5 physical launched on the 17th.
- Languages: Japanese and English voices. Text in Japanese, English, French, German and Spanish, plus Chinese and Korean via Clouded Leopard.
- Ratings: ESRB T (Blood, Fantasy Violence, Language, Simulated Gambling, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco), CERO C (15+, one step above 1st Chapter’s CERO B), and PEGI 12 per retail listings.
What’s confirmed so far
Nothing that scores as woke has been confirmed yet. Here’s what the primary sources do show:
- Adult content and fanservice are still there. ESRB: “Several female characters are designed with revealing outfits (e.g., deep cleavage) and breasts that jiggle during combat; one female fantasy creature is designed with exposed breasts”. It also lists visibly drunk or passed-out characters, a smoker, and a casino with slots, roulette, blackjack and poker. The drinking jokes survive too (“I know you might be curious about alcohol, but you’re still only 12”). That isn’t a scrubbed teen build.
- Story scope is kept, with some additions. Falcom’s Kondo says the remake keeps the original’s atmosphere and experience while making it approachable for newcomers (ASCII, 2 Sep 2026). The additions are side quests for NPCs such as Duke Dunan, Mueller and Julia as playable characters, a new area in Le Locle, and a late-game segment tied to the 3rd. Reviewers at RPG Site and NookGaming describe the new material as restrained and non-retconning.
- The localisation got better, not more political. Kotaku, NookGaming and RPG Site all say 2nd Chapter fixes 1st Chapter’s terminology and pronunciation problems (the Tetracyclic Tower names are restored, Liberl and Zin are pronounced correctly) and gives Estelle more of her old spark. Kevin Graham’s Boston accent, which stands in for his Kansai dialect, was carried over from NISA’s Trails Beyond the Horizon. That’s a characterisation choice, not an agenda. GungHo says the script is translated entirely by humans.
- No DEI marketing: no pronoun options, no representation packaging, and no corporate branding in GungHo’s or Falcom’s campaign.
Checked and not confirmed (or ruled out)
| Talking point | Finding |
|---|---|
| Spats added under Estelle’s new SC skirt | Reported, not verified. Steam posters (from the teaser at the end of 1st Chapter) and a small Change.org petition (April 2026, about 130 signatures) say the remake adds safety shorts that the original SC outfit didn’t have. Falcom’s official character art doesn’t show them, and we found no close-up or statement confirming it. If confirmed, it would be mild de-sexualisation of a 16-year-old’s costume, and it wouldn’t change the score much. |
| 1st Chapter-style gender-line edits (e.g. “for a girl”) repeated in SC | Not documented yet. No Japanese or English comparison of the 2nd Chapter demo or full game has turned up any. This is the main reason the page is open to update. |
| Olivier’s flirting with Joshua, Scherazard’s drinking, the hot-spring side content | No reports of removal. ESRB confirms the drunk scenes, and walkthroughs confirm the hot-spring content. We haven’t found a scene-by-scene check of Olivier’s jokes yet. |
| Renne’s portrayal softened | No evidence. Renne is in the game and in marketing screenshots. The darkest parts of her backstory belong to the 3rd, which hasn’t been remade. |
| GungHo’s English “censored” SC | Not established. The complaints about 1st Chapter were about quality and terminology, and reviewers say those have been largely fixed here. |
The 1st Chapter track record (why the score isn’t lower)
In 1st Chapter, Falcom edited its own Japanese script to remove “pretty good for a girl”, “girls butting into boys’ business” and a skirt jab, and gave Estelle a new line that questions “acting like a girl”. The same team, engine and localisation partner made 2nd Chapter. The sensible default is that similar small edits may exist in SC’s much larger script. That’s a risk, not a finding, and it’s weighted lightly.
Localisation context
GungHo, not NIS America, localises the Sky remakes. Its 1st Chapter script was criticised as rushed and literal and then corrected with the Legacy Patch, and 2nd Chapter launched with those fixes built in. Context only, not scored: NISA’s mainline Trails scripts have been criticised for modern slang (Nadia’s “rizz” in Daybreak II), but NISA had no part in this game.
DEI Detector scorecard
| Signal | Present? |
|---|---|
| Story / dialogue rewrites for modern sensibilities | Not documented yet (1st Chapter precedent keeps it open) |
| Sexual / feminine censorship of the cast | Weak (reported spats on Estelle’s new outfit; ESRB confirms revealing outfits and jiggle physics) |
| Woke or inclusive-language localisation | Not established (script improved and moved back to legacy terms) |
| Scenes cut (drinking, Olivier, hot springs) | No reports |
| DEI marketing, pronouns, representation packaging | Absent |
| Regional-only censorship | None found. All regions share one master script; only the EU/AU Switch physical release date differs |
Recommendation
Cleanest way to play:
- The original Sora no Kiseki SC in Japanese (Windows via DMM / DLsite, PSP, PS3 Kai HD), or in English, XSEED’s Trails in the Sky SC (PC / PSP 2015). It’s the uncut 2006 script with Estelle’s original outfit. Go on to the 3rd on PC for the full Renne arc.
- Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is so far a clean, faithful way to play SC with modern combat and an improved script. If you have a 1st Chapter clear save, the free “Classic Style SC” costumes put Estelle and Joshua back in their original SC designs. That’s the easy fix if the reported spats bother you.
- There’s no cleaner regional build of the remake: Japanese, English and Asian versions share Falcom’s master script. The Japanese audio track is available in every Western version.
At a provisional 22, 2nd Chapter sits below 1st Chapter (30) and Persona 3 Reload (34), because nothing has been confirmed yet. If confirmed line edits or costume changes surface, the score moves up.
