Resident Evil Requiem

Woke Score: 17/100

#games

Verdict: Resident Evil Requiem is a Japanese-directed survival-horror game with no DEI agenda we could find. There’s no activist story, no race or gender swaps, no pronoun or representation marketing, and no inclusive-language localisation controversy. The loud “Grace is woke / censored” posts are about taste: she’s a plain, timid FBI analyst by design, and Capcom says so openly. The only real censorship is the usual one, Japan’s CERO Z gore trim, and the Western builds are uncut.

Woke Score: 17/100. Five of those points are a track-record penalty: Capcom has toned down its own female characters before (Street Fighter V, 2015). The rest comes from the fair “no fanservice” complaint. Requiem ships no swimsuit-style outfits, and fans read Capcom’s pride in its female staff sharpening “hot uncle” Leon, while Grace stays covered up, as a double standard. That’s a design choice we can see, but there’s no evidence of an ideological motive.

This is the standing page for Resident Evil Requiem. DLC is in development (Nakanishi, March 2026), so new evidence gets merged here and the URL stays the same.

How the score breaks down

Scored against our How we score rules:

  • Track-record rule (rule B), +5 for Capcom. Documented reason: before Street Fighter V launched (late 2015), Capcom cut or reframed sexualised shots of its own women, including R. Mika’s butt-slap close-up and crotch-level camera angles in Cammy’s and Chun-Li’s animations. Producer Yoshinori Ono said it was an internal decision, not outside pressure, made so the game wouldn’t make players uncomfortable and would reach the widest audience (reported by Tech Times and others). That gives Capcom less benefit of the doubt on Requiem’s fanservice-free presentation of Grace. We still take director Koshi Nakanishi’s stated reasons at face value, because they fit the character.
  • Remake rule (rule C): doesn’t apply. Requiem is a new game, and no returning woman was redesigned.
  • Consultancy check (rule A): none found. Not in Sweet Baby Inc.’s documented gameography or on the “Sweet Baby Inc detected” Steam curator’s current list, and no DEI or sensitivity consultancy is credited or reported. We couldn’t search the full credit roll (it’s only available as a video), so this is based on published credit listings and reporting.

The facts

  • Official title: Resident Evil Requiem (Japan: Biohazard Requiem). It’s the ninth mainline game, developed and published by Capcom on the RE Engine and directed by Koshi Nakanishi (RE7).
  • Release: 27 February 2026, simultaneous worldwide, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam / Epic) and Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom’s IR releases confirm it.
  • Sales: 5M in five days, 6M by 16 March 2026 (Capcom IR, “fastest in the series”), and about 8M+ by July (Wikipedia / Ampere Analysis).
  • Ratings: ESRB M (Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language), PEGI 18, USK 18, CERO Z (Japan, and only a Z version).
  • Cast: Grace Ashcroft (Angela Sant’Albano; Shihori Kanjiya in Japanese), Leon S. Kennedy (Nick Apostolides; Toshiyuki Morikawa), Sherry Birkin (Eden Riegel), Alyssa Ashcroft (Jane Perry), Victor Gideon (Antony Byrne) and Emily (Emma Rose Creaner). Writer: Haris Orkin.

Grace Ashcroft: the design and the reaction

What Capcom says she is. Capcom describes Grace as an introverted bookworm who feels powerless because, unlike Claire or Jill, she isn’t a trained fighter. Nakanishi says her first-person camera and shaking hands on the gun are there to sell her as timid (AUTOMATON interview, 27 January 2026). Her animation deliberately follows the horror “final girl” trope.

The criticism.

  • “Same face” / plain: after the June 2025 reveal, fans said Grace looked like Rose Winters or Jill and complained about same-face syndrome across Capcom’s recent women (TheGamer, 8 June 2025).
  • “Censored / downgraded”: viral posts at launch said “all female characters were censored and downgraded except Leon”, with no “iconic fan-service outfits” (ThatFeed roundup). Steam threads titled “ITS WOKE” and “Grace was a DEI hire” followed.
  • Double standard: Nakanishi said Capcom’s female staff critiqued older Leon “down to the wrinkles on his neck” to make a design “that would make anyone’s heart throb” (the “ikeoji” / hot-uncle Leon). Some fans read that as Capcom openly serving the female gaze while keeping Grace plain.

The other side, and what the evidence shows.

  • Grace is a new character, so there’s no earlier, sexier version of her that got toned down. Rule 2 is about censorship compared with source material or earlier entries, and there’s nothing here to compare her against.
  • Players rejected an “enhanced” Grace. When Nvidia’s DLSS 5 demo (March 2026) ran her face through an AI filter, the backlash was nearly universal (“that’s not even Grace”). Producer Masato Kumazawa told Eurogamer this “meant we got the design right” and that Grace “quickly established herself as a fan favourite” (IGN, Polygon, VGC, Kotaku).
  • Leon is fully clothed and not sexualised. He’s just older and more muscular. There are also no cut or altered female outfits: Grace’s costumes include an unlockable Jacket and FBI Attire, plus Film Noir and a Dimitrescu tribute in the Deluxe kit (VGC / Game8 costume lists).

How we score it: a small weak mark for the lack of fanservice and the gaze asymmetry Capcom itself described. Nothing more, because there’s no redesign of an existing woman, no stated political motive and no DEI framing.

Checked and not confirmed (or ruled out)

Talking point Finding
Grace is a “DEI hire” / a woke insert protagonist Ruled out. She’s the daughter of Outbreak’s Alyssa Ashcroft, built as a classic horror “final girl”, and Capcom never frames her in representation terms.
Female characters “censored and downgraded” No evidence. None of the returning women (Sherry, Alyssa) was redesigned against an earlier sexualised look. The complaints are about style.
Grace’s real-life face model is X Unconfirmed. Fans point to Julia Pratt, but Capcom hasn’t confirmed it (DualShockers, VGTimes). Not scored either way.
Woke / inclusive localisation Not found. No documented translation controversy in any language.
Race or gender swaps None. Returning characters keep their established identities.
“Requiem is uncut CERO Z in Japan” (repeated by some outlets) False. Capcom’s own FAQ says expressions differ by region to meet each ratings board. See below.

Context: earlier RE redesign discourse (not scored here)

The RE4 remake (2023) had its own debates: Ashley was reworked as less of a helpless damsel, and Ada’s face model and voice performance drew criticism. Those arguments explain why fans came to Requiem suspicious. But they belong to RE4, and Requiem doesn’t repeat them with any returning character. We mention them for context only.

Regional notes and cleanest version

This is the rule 4 case. The Japanese build is gore-censored, and the Western build is the clean one.

  • Capcom (Japan support FAQ): the core content is the same as overseas, but “some expressions differ” to comply with each region’s ratings board, with CERO’s banned-content rules as the reference.
  • What’s trimmed in Japan (Game*Spark, 2 March 2026, with screenshots): the cut surfaces of severed heads, limbs and torsos are blacked out, exposed insides are darkened, and the “organless corpse” puzzle body becomes a flat black mass. What stays: head destruction and decapitation (including tomahawk kills and a severed head left on the floor), partial facial damage, and torsos split by explosions. Game*Spark calls it the least-censored Japanese RE ever. Previous Japanese builds blacked out whole limbs (RE2/RE4 remakes) or deleted torso splits entirely.
  • Only a CERO Z version: Nakanishi confirmed there’s no separate CERO D release this time, following RE4 remake’s precedent. All Japanese marketing used the CERO Z footage (AUTOMATON).
  • Cleanest version: the Western (overseas) release on any platform. It’s uncut and has the full Japanese voice and text options, so Japanese players who buy it (for example, an overseas Steam key activated from Japan) get uncut gore in Japanese (Asobulo, RunTL).
  • Story and characters: identical in every region. There’s no “less woke” regional build because there’s nothing to remove.

Marketing and corporate

  • The marketing was horror-first: the Raccoon City reveal at Summer Game Fest 2025, gameplay trailers, a live-action trailer with Maika Monroe, and tie-ins with Porsche, Hamilton and Fortnite. We found no Pride, pronoun or DEI themes.
  • Capcom has no DEI-driven messaging tied to this game.

DEI Detector scorecard

Signal Present?
DEI / activist story themes Absent
Race / gender swaps Absent
Sexual / feminine censorship vs earlier versions Not applicable (Grace is new); no altered returning women
Lack of fanservice / female-gaze asymmetry Weak (visible, openly described by the director, not political)
Woke / inclusive localisation Not found
DEI consultancy / marketing Absent (no consultancy found in credit listings or reporting)
Publisher track record (Capcom: Street Fighter V fanservice cuts, 2015) Present (rule B, +5)
Regional censorship Yes. Japan’s CERO Z blacks out gore; Western builds uncut

Recommendation

Buy the Western release for the uncut gore (it has Japanese language options). Story-wise, Requiem is exactly what it looks like: a nostalgic, very bloody Resident Evil with a scared new heroine and a tired, handsome Leon. It sits at the clean end of the site’s scale, above Stellar Blade (6) and well below Persona 3 Reload (37).

Open to update

This page will be revisited when the DLC ships, or if a full credit roll turns up a DEI or sensitivity consultancy (which would lift it to at least our ~70 floor).
