Gears of War: E-Day
Verdict: Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel about young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago on the day the Locust break the surface. They are still the leads, still voiced by John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro, and the chainsaw, the gore and the swearing are still in the game. The one documented political signal is Mags Carter, a new squadmate whose home, according to a reviewer who played the campaign, confirms she is queer. The nod is described as subtle. It still counts. Nothing else we could source is a rewrite of the old cast, a girlboss script, or a censored cut.
Woke Score: 10/100. One line: Mags. The rest of the announced game is the old Gears tone.

Woke Score graphic
This is the standing page for Gears of War: E-Day (The Coalition, Xbox Game Studios). Early access went live worldwide on 1 October 2026 at 23:00 HKT (8:00 a.m. PT) for Premium Edition players and Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade. The full launch is 6 October 2026 at 23:00 HKT, on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass (Mike Crump, Xbox Wire, 1 October 2026). New evidence gets merged here; the URL stays fixed.
How the score breaks down
Scored against our How we score rules:
- Mags Carter, queer confirmation, +10. She is one of four playable members of Bravo Squad, with Marcus, Dom and Lucas Reyes. Luke Mitchell (Checkpoint Gaming, review-in-progress, 1 October 2026, played on Xbox Series X|S) says an early side trip to her home “confirms that she is queer.” He calls the nod subtle and “not made a big deal of,” and he says the campaign is still Marcus and Dom’s story. That is a queer character in the core squad, shown in the campaign, not a trailer joke. It is +10, above the +5 for Kingdom Come’s optional Novice Lucas, because she is playable and the visit is in the campaign, and well under a romance plot or a speech, because the review quotes no line, names no partner, and says it is not the point of the game. Polygon’s campaign review (Ford James, 1 October 2026) never mentions it. We have not seen the room ourselves.
- Roster versus Gears 1 (rule C): 0. Marcus and Dom return, younger, same actors (official Gears of War account, 7 November 2024, reported by GameSpot). They are not race-swapped or gender-swapped. The new pair are Mags Carter (Elizabeth Ludlow) and Lucas Reyes (Jake Ryan Lozano). Xbox Wire (Danielle Partis, 7 June 2026): Marcus and Dom “sit in the front,” Mags and Lucas “sit in the back.” Tai Kaliso returns from the comics and Gears of War 2. Nicole Fawcette says they cast Maateiwarangi Heta-Morris, a New Zealand arm-wrestling champion, to honour Tai’s South Islands roots. That is casting an existing character, not a swap of Marcus or Dom. Rod Fergusson told GamesRadar+ (13 June 2024) this is the first mainline Gears game he has had nothing to do with. The prequel filling blank canon is not, by itself, a political change.
- Women (rule E): 0. Polygon calls Marcus the squad leader. Mags is a former Gear at Kalona’s Imulsion refinery. Matt Searcy told GamesBeat he would not say why she was dishonourably discharged. Checkpoint, after playing, still calls her reasons for leaving “murky” and groups her with Marcus and Dom as the battle-hardened trio who snicker at the rookie. That is a classic Gears soldier, not a woman written as infallible or a man written as useless for being a man. A female squadmate on her own scores nothing.
- Other identity writing: 0. No they/them character, pronoun lecture, bisexual romance, or anti-capitalist moral turned up in the Xbox Wire interviews, the GamesBeat deep dive, or the campaign reviews we read. Dom’s worry in this game, per Polygon, is his family, which is the old canon (he has a wife and children before Emergence Day). Karen Traviss, author of the novels and a former war correspondent, consulted on that continuity (Xbox Wire, 7 June 2026). That is lore checking, not an inclusion firm.
- Consultancy (rule A): not found. No Sweet Baby Inc. credit, sensitivity reader, or diversity consultant appears in The Coalition’s published interviews or the reviews. Sweet Baby’s own project list does not name this game. A claim that Xbox Game Studios was once a Sweet Baby client, then dropped from the site, is not a credit on E-Day. Fergusson is not on the project.
- Track record (rule B): not applied. Gears 5 made Kait Diaz the lead. A woman lead is not girlboss writing, and Fawcette told GamesRadar+ that E-Day “isn’t a reaction to Gears 5.” We found no consultancy mandate carried from that game into this script, so the old game is not charged again here.
- Press (rule D): 0. Checkpoint praises the queer nod. Praise for diversity is not an attack on the work, so it is not a discount, and it is not a second score on top of the +10. Polygon’s “one huge flaw” is pacing in the open city sections, not politics. The Guardian (30 September 2026) calls the campaign boring around strong combat. Quality complaints do not count. We found no progressive-outlet attack on the game for being too male or too gory.
- Censorship versus classic Gears: 0. Checkpoint describes piled bodies, dismemberment, blood in the fountains, a chainsaw execution, and Marcus yelling a censored-in-print insult (“f***face”) at a Locust. Kate Rayner (Xbox Wire, 9 June 2024) lists “next generation destruction and gore” as a technical target. The Chainsaw Lancer is in the game: Xbox Wire (7 June 2026) says it is kit-bashed on the battlefield during the invasion. TechRadar (Dashiell Wood, 2 October 2026) notes separate player filters for gore, profanity and chat. A toggle the player can turn on is not a regional cut. We found no China build that removes sex, language or blood.
Total: 10 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 10.
Confirmed findings
- Early access is out. The wide launch is not, as of 4 October 2026. Premium and upgraded Game Pass players can play. Everyone else gets it on 6 October.
- The campaign reviews describe the old tone. Horror, civilians torn apart, executions, profanity, Marcus and Dom’s brotherhood, Dom’s family. Five acts, one city (Kalona), about three days (Xbox Wire).
- Mags is queer on the evidence of one played review. Subtle, at home, not a speech. That is the score.
- No named DEI credit. Traviss is the canon consultant. Rayner is the technical director. Neither is an inclusion consultancy.
Checked and not confirmed (or ruled out)
| Talking point | Finding |
|---|---|
| Marcus or Dom were race-swapped, gender-swapped, or written as a couple | No. Same actors. The story told in the reviews is brotherhood and Dom’s family. Fan posts that they are lovers are not a scene. |
| Mags is a girlboss who lectures the men | Not in the reviews. She is a veteran in the squad. Marcus is the leader. The “Great shooting, Carter” bark and a Kate Rayner “visibility” post are a Fandom Pulse claim we could not verify against her words or the game, so they are not scored. |
| What the home scene actually shows | Not quoted. Checkpoint says it confirms she is queer. No photo, flag, partner, or line is described. Polygon’s review is silent on it. |
| Sweet Baby Inc. | Not found on this game. |
| Gore, sex or swearing was cut versus Gears 1 | The opposite in the reviews we read. Filters exist as options. |
| Adepta-style removal of women, or a new pronoun system | Not found. |
| Fergusson steered the script | No. He said this is the first mainline Gears game he had nothing to do with (GamesRadar+, 13 June 2024). |
Cleanest version and regional notes
Early access is the current build, and the 6 October launch is the same game opening to everyone else. We found no region that restores cut gore or language, because we found no such cut. If a filter for gore or profanity is on, turn it off. That is a menu, not a different edition.

Open to update
This page will be revisited if:
- The home scene is shown to be a speech, a flagged romance, or a misread, which would move the 10.
- A credit, LinkedIn post or reliable report shows a diversity or sensitivity consultancy on this game.
- A patch or the post-launch script adds a political moral, a pronoun change, or a cut to gore or language that the early-access reviews did not have.
- The Fandom Pulse dialogue claim is backed by a clip or by Rayner’s own words.
