Crimson Desert
Verdict: Crimson Desert has close to nothing for this site to flag. It’s a Korean-made revenge-and-reunion fantasy with a fixed male lead (Kliff), no representation messaging, no DEI marketing, and the same content in every region. The one “censorship” story, shorts added under Damiane’s skirt in patch 1.06, was officially called a clipping-fix bug and reverted in 1.07 three days later. Most of the culture-war noise around the game comes from people arguing about it, not from anything in it.
Woke Score: 8/100. The points it does get are for Damiane’s plain, practical design, which some players call “masculine”, and for the brief outfit scare. Neither shows any agenda. The design is the studio’s art direction, and the outfit change was reverted.

This is the standing page for Crimson Desert, including the free “Enhanced” 2.0 update and the upcoming Charting the Unknown DLC. New evidence gets merged here; the URL stays fixed. Related pages: Stellar Blade (another Korean action game that went through a costume-patch fight).
The facts
- Release: 19 March 2026, worldwide, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Epic) and Mac. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is in the works for the first half of 2027 (Polygon, Nintendo Life).
- Developer / publisher: Pearl Abyss (Black Desert Online) developed and self-published it on its in-house BlackSpace Engine. Seven years in development. PLAION is listed on the ESRB entry for the physical release.
- Post-launch: the free “Crimson Desert Enhanced” (v2.00.00) update arrived on 25 August 2026, adding new story cutscenes and dialogue, German / French / Spanish / Japanese / Brazilian Portuguese voice tracks, and Arabic text. The paid DLC Charting the Unknown (sailing, diving, housing) is due 15 October 2026.
- Sales: 2 million on day one, 5 million by 15 April, and 6 million by 11 June 2026 (Pearl Abyss). The Q2 earnings letter adds 2.11 million copies sold in April–June.
- Ratings: ESRB M (Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Strong Language), with no Sexual Themes or Nudity descriptor. PEGI 18, USK 18, CERO Z, and Korea 19+ (청소년이용불가) for violence, language, crime and gambling. This is an adult violence rating, not a fanservice rating.
Confirmed: the Damiane outfit “censorship” was a bug, and it was reverted
- What happened: after update 1.06.00 (May 2026), players noticed that Damiane’s popular Elegant Carmine Leather Armor now had black shorts under the skirt. Steam reviews went negative, and threads on r/KotakuInAction and Steam called it censorship (MP1st, VICE).
- Pearl Abyss’s answer: the official Known Issues notice said: “While fixing an issue where the Elegant Carmine Leather Armor would clip, its appearance was unintentionally altered. This issue will be resolved in the next patch.”
- The fix: the 1.07.00 patch notes (15 May 2026) list “[Damiane] Fixed an issue where the ‘Elegant Carmine Leather Armor’ appeared abnormally,” and the outfit went back to its original look (VICE, GataGames, DayOne).
- How we score it: whether you believe the “bug” explanation or not, the result is what counts. The change lasted a few days and was reversed after player feedback, and nothing else was touched. We score that as close to zero. Compare Stellar Blade, where outfit changes were a bigger fight.
Confirmed: no DEI framing in story, cast or marketing
- Story: Kliff and the Greymanes mercenary band are ambushed by the rival Black Bears. The plot follows Kliff reuniting the survivors and going after Black Bear leader Myurdin. Critics called the story weak or “aimless” (IGN, Eurogamer), and none of them described a political or identity theme. We found none either.
- Protagonist and playable cast: you’re locked to Kliff for most of the game. Damiane (a swordswoman from a fallen house) and Oongka (an orc Greymane) unlock dozens of hours in and have smaller skill trees and less gear. PC Gamer’s Mollie Taylor criticised how sidelined Damiane is. Some r/GirlGamers users disliked the lack of a character creator or a female lead. That’s the opposite of a DEI agenda: the complaint is that the game didn’t add one.
- Studio statements: we found no Pearl Abyss statement about diversity, representation or “modern audiences” for this game. Interviews and marketing are about scale, combat, the engine and the world. Pearl Abyss also hasn’t publicly explained why there’s no character creator. Interviews simply present Kliff as a fixed, voiced protagonist.
- Consultancies: Sweet Baby Inc. and similar firms don’t list Crimson Desert or Pearl Abyss anywhere. The rumour comes from unsourced social posts only.
Checked and not confirmed (or ruled out)
| Talking point | Finding |
|---|---|
| Damiane was “DEI-ified” / deliberately made unattractive | Not established. Steam and KiA threads call her face androgynous or masculine. Plenty of replies in the same threads (KiA included) defend her as a believable warrior. Side-by-side shots from 2024 and 2026 trailers use different lighting, armour and hair, so they don’t prove a redesign. There’s no developer statement tying her look to politics. It’s a matter of taste, so we give it a small weight and nothing more. |
| Outfit censorship patch | Ruled out as intentional. Officially a clipping-fix bug, reverted in 1.07 (see above). |
| “You can punch women” controversy means the devs were forced to change it | Ruled out. A clip of Kliff brawling a female bandit went viral in March 2026. Anti-woke accounts praised it as “equality” and some others criticised it. That debate happened on YouTube and Reddit. We found no Pearl Abyss statement and no patch that removed female enemies or changed how you can fight them. |
| Western release cut or “softened” compared with Korea | No evidence. All regions got one global build on the same day. The Korea 19+ and CERO Z ratings match the Western M / 18 ratings, and we found no reports of region-specific cuts. |
| Inclusive or activist localisation | No documented cases. The game was voiced in English at launch, and 2.0 added five more voice languages. Patch notes only mention generic “localization quality” fixes. We found no gender-neutral-language or rewrite controversy. |
| The game is “proudly non-DEI” by design | Not claimed by the studio. That’s a label fans applied (KiA threads crediting its sales to being “non-woke”). Pearl Abyss never marketed it that way. We’re scoring what’s in the game, and there’s nothing DEI in it. |
Fanservice, costumes and ratings
Crimson Desert is not a fanservice game, and that’s by design, not censorship. The ESRB summary lists no sexual content at all: its descriptors are all about violence, a fictional drug (“Dreamer’s Bliss”) and swearing. Female NPCs, bandits and Damiane wear grounded medieval-fantasy armour and clothing, the same way Kliff does. That’s far from the more revealing class designs in Pearl Abyss’s own Black Desert Online, but it’s a different game with a different tone, and none of that was taken out after launch. The only costume change on record (the Carmine armour) was reversed.
Outside our scope (noted for completeness)
- Generative AI assets: after launch, players found AI-generated paintings and signs. Pearl Abyss apologised for “oversights,” said they were “unintentionally included,” and promised to audit and replace them. That’s a disclosure and quality issue, not DEI or censorship, so it isn’t scored.
- Intel Arc support: the game shipped without Intel Arc GPU support, and Pearl Abyss later issued a partial fix. That’s a tech issue and isn’t scored.
DEI Detector scorecard
| Signal | Present? |
|---|---|
| DEI / identity themes in the story | Absent |
| Casting or representation packaging (pronouns, diversity marketing) | Absent |
| Studio “modern audiences” statements | Absent |
| Sexual / feminine censorship after release | Weak (one outfit change, officially a bug, reverted in 3 days) |
| Female design “uglified” for politics | Not established (Damiane’s look is contested taste, not evidence) |
| Woke or inclusive-language localisation | Not established |
| Regional-only censorship | No. One global build |
Recommendation
Cleanest way to play: any current version. PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic and Mac all share the same global build, and the Damiane outfit is back to normal from v1.07.00 onward, so make sure your game is updated. There’s no cleaner region to import, because there’s nothing to dodge. The free Enhanced (2.0) update only added story scenes, voice languages and skills. We found nothing in its patch notes that removes or rewrites content.
At 8, Crimson Desert is one of the lowest scores on the site, above Stellar Blade (6). Most of the “woke” arguments about it are about what it doesn’t have (a female lead, a character creator), and that points the other way.
Open to update
This page will be revisited when:
- Charting the Unknown comes out (15 October 2026), with its new companions and story, and when the Switch 2 version arrives (targeted for H1 2027). A Nintendo-platform build is the most likely place for any rating-driven changes.
- Pearl Abyss finishes replacing the AI assets or adds any content in later patches that changes character designs.
- Anyone produces a documented before/after (patch notes, footage) of a costume, scene or line changed for political reasons. Send it and we’ll add it.
