Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

Woke Score: 0/100

#games

Verdict: Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is a Strangereal air war about a silent pilot who inherits a made-up ace legend. The squadron is a teacher, a Yuktobanian stunt pilot, and a rock musician. The war plot is propaganda, morale, and an invasion, which this series has always done. Pinup nose art and swearing are still in the rating. No queer character, girlboss script, or sensitivity credit turned up in the sources we could read.

Woke Score: 0/100. Nothing documented clears the bar. The new male-dialogue rule was checked against quoted lines and does not add a point.

This is the standing page for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (Bandai Namco Aces / Project Aces, published by Bandai Namco). The official title is ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, not a working name. Early access for Deluxe and Joker Flight pre-orders started 29 September 2026 at 06:00 HKT (00:00 CEST). The worldwide launch was 2 October 2026 at 06:00 HKT, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Bandai Namco Europe, 22 September 2026; Bandai Namco America, 29 September 2026). New evidence gets merged here; the URL stays fixed.

How the score breaks down

Scored against our How we score rules:

  • The war plot: 0. You play Rex, callsign of the new Wings of Theve, after Jan Cope, the previous holder of that name, is killed (Bandai Namco Europe). The legend is a morale fiction. Brand director Kazutoki Kono told Metro (4 June 2026) that social media’s true-or-false confusion is mirrored in the game, including a “Fake Wings.” Polygon’s review compares that device to the Ghost of Kyiv. That is the series’ old trick, a fabricated ace, not a caricature of a living politician and not a lecture against capitalism. Destructoid says Sotoa invades because industrialisation has ruined its own land. That is the invader’s reason for a war. No review quoted a sermon about it. Ace Combat has used resource wars and national myths since the PlayStation 2 games. This is that, not a new moral.
  • Joker Flight, women (rule E): 0. Joker 3 is Tasha Severskaya, a Yuktobanian aerobatic pilot from the Zvezda display team who was on the carrier for a photo shoot and volunteered (Bandai Namco Europe). IGN (SEA) says she is a civilian stunt pilot who refuses to shoot anyone down, and that the story has her confront the cost of that pacifism. PC Gamer calls her bubbly and reluctant, reckoning with blood and her mother’s legacy. Anime News Network credits Emi Lo. She is an anime stunt pilot with a conscience, not a woman written as infallible and not a man written as useless. Baxter, callsign Professor, is a former teacher by design (Europe site: “a teacher’s patience”). Coster, callsign Noise, likes hard rock. A female wingman is not a point.
  • Male dialogue (out-of-character rule): 0. No review quotes Baxter, Coster, or Cope in HR or therapy language. Metro’s preview says the studio wanted the chatter “less anime” and “more grounded,” and the writer found it clunky and constant, not feminine. GameCentral asked Kono if the series is anti-war. Producer Manabu Shimomoto answered by talking about drones becoming real and about making an entertainment product. That is not a rewritten male lead. Grief and exhaustion for Cope, who PC Gamer says speaks in “wounded poetic” lines, fit a dead ace used as a ghost narrator. We did not find a line that is out of that character.
  • Queer writing: 0. Rex is a silent cipher you inhabit (Anime News Network). Official copy does not give Rex a they/them identity. Tasha is “she” in every official and review source we read. A Steam thread calling pink highlights and a wheelchair “woke” is a fan complaint. Replies there call the hair a gyaru style the series has used before. No review describes a pride flag, a queer romance, or a pronoun lecture.
  • Consultancy (rule A): 0. MobyGames has the game entry and no credit roll yet. Sweet Baby Inc.’s project list does not name it. The named story people in interviews are Kono and Shimomoto. Audio credits on VGMdb are composers and sound designers, not inclusion readers.
  • Track record (rule B): 0. Earlier Ace Combat games are war melodramas with the same studio. We found no DEI mandate or censored remake that this script inherits.
  • Press (rule D): 0. Polygon, IGN, Destructoid, and PC Gamer praise the flying and argue about whether the story is moving or too long. That is quality. No progressive outlet was found attacking the game for being too male, too sexy, or not diverse enough. Fan-forum “Wings of Woke” posts do not count.
  • Censorship versus earlier Ace Combat: 0. The ESRB rates it T for Blood, Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, and Violence. The summary says cutscenes show people shot, with blood; nose art and banners show pinups in bikinis and cleavage; “sht” and “ashole” appear. That is the opposite of a sex or language cut. No China or other regional build was found that removes it. The Deluxe edition’s “Tasha Costume Set” is a multiplayer lobby cosmetic, not a covered-up campaign model.

Total: 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 0.

Confirmed findings

  • The game is out. Early access 29 September 2026, full launch 2 October 2026. Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series, Steam.
  • Squad, from the publisher: Rex (you, Joker 1), Ellington Baxter (Joker 2, Professor), Tasha Severskaya (Joker 3), William Coster (Joker 4, Noise). Jan Cope was the previous Wings of Theve.
  • English voices named by Anime News Network: William C. Stephens as Baxter, Emi Lo as Tasha, Ray Chase as Noise. PC Gamer credits Mark Bodie as Cope. PC Gamer also writes “Jane Rex Cope.” Bandai Namco Europe and TechRadar say Jan Cope. We use Jan.
  • Pinups and swearing are in the ESRB sheet. Not cut.

Checked and not confirmed (or ruled out)

Talking point Finding
A queer or they/them pilot Not found. Rex is silent. Tasha is written as she.
Tasha is a girlboss No. Civilian ace who does not want to kill, then has to face that. Anime stunt-pilot writing.
Baxter’s teacher voice is HR dialogue Not shown. The teacher personality is the official character. No therapy line was quoted.
Pink hair or a wheelchair scene is a DEI insert Fan thread only. Not described as politics in any review we read. Not scored.
Sweet Baby or a sensitivity credit Not found. Credit roll not on MobyGames yet.
Sex, blood, or swearing removed versus Ace Combat 7 No report. ESRB still lists all three.
Sotoa’s farmland motive is an anti-capitalist moral Not as quoted. Destructoid gives it as why they invade. No sermon was excerpted.

Cleanest version and regional notes

The retail build on PS5, Xbox Series, and Steam is the game. We found no region that restores cut pinups or language, because we found no such cut. The pre-order copy of Ace Combat Zero is a port of the 2006 game, not a rewritten script (Bandai Namco Europe).

This page will be revisited if:

  • A credit roll shows a diversity or sensitivity consultancy.
  • A quoted scene adds a queer relationship, a pronoun lecture, or a political caricature.
  • A quoted Baxter, Coster, or Cope line is therapy-speak or a feminine register that is not that character.
  • A regional build is shown to cut the pinup art or the language the ESRB describes.
